While cloth and disposable diapers are both effective, choosing the right diaper may come down to personal choice. In order to help you determine which diaper best suits your baby, here are five things to consider.
Cost Efficiency
Since your child may need to regularly wear a diaper from birth to the average age of three, stocking up weekly on disposable diapers isn’t cheap. Disposable diapers are certainly more expensive when you compared them to washable cloth diapers that only need to be purchased once and last for a year on average before wearing out.
Convenience
Disposable diapers are much more convenient than cloth diapers when traveling. Even though disposables are just as bulky as cloth, when soiled, disposables can be tossed in the trash, freeing up space in your bag. Soiled cloth diapers, on the other hand, need to be scooped flushed, and washed. For parents who don’t want the inconvenience of washing dirty cloth diapers, disposables diapers might be their best option.
Environment-Friendly
Since disposable diapers are made of plastic and synthetic fillings, they can take years to decompose. Cloth diapers pose little threat to the environment since they only need to be washed. While some disposable diapers brands are made of environment-friendly materials, in the long run, cloth diapers produce less pollution by greatly help reducing waste.
Comfort
Cloth and disposable diapers are both comfortable to wear, but neither one should be worn longer than 5 hours at a time. For long-term use, cloth diapers are less prone to giving rashes, but their fabric filling makes them less comfortable because they absorb more heat than disposables. Made from breathable material that is easy to crumble when soiled, disposable diapers provide coolness that cloth diapers are not capable of.
Size Options
While both diapers come in all sizes, disposables provide more variety than cloth diapers who have limited size options depending on the brand and availability. Disposables are conveniently packed in sizes by age or weight of the baby. To be fair, adjustable diaper cloths do exist for newborns and toddlers. Even though these adjustable diapers are slightly more expensive than basic cloth diapers, they're more difficult to find.
Based on these five issues, you can decide on whether cloth or disposables diapers are ideal for your baby. If you’re still finding it difficult to choose, you can always use both; cloth diaper for home use and disposables for traveling.
